Toadstool Series No. 1
The Toadstool Project is a series of collectible soft sculptures inspired by Color Field painters like Kenneth Noland and Frank Stella, who lured viewers with magnetic targets and bold geometry as well as the playful and functional practices of the Memphis Design Group.
Each stool is unique, featuring a distinct gradient created digitally, exploring color relationships and their optical effects of advancing and receding forms.
Like many of my projects, the toadstools tell a story of a vibrant landscape in the future where Mother Nature and humans collaborate to produce colorful creations only possible through mutual respect and harmony.
The stools range from "Sprout Size" (33 cm x 33 cm x 33 cm) to “Full Grown” (50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm) and feature a performance velvet exterior and a wooden and foam interior. Its durable polycarbonate base doubles as the certificate of authenticity which is numbered, signed and dated.
Documented here is the first limited series of 36 which allows me to practice sustainability by lowering my carbon footprint, reducing waste, preserving energy during production and providing each collector with unique and lasting pieces.
Although each stool is collectible as a singular seat or small cluster, they also serve a purpose as a communal gathering space and traveling installation to be discovered as they adapt to their distinct geographical regions and contexts.
